Day 1: This morning we travel westwards for a visit to Clonmacnoise, monastic site founded by St Ciaran. The monastery flourished for 600 years as a centre of learning and as a site of religious power. Located on the banks of the River Shannon is home to high crosses, a cathedral, churches and two round towers which were noted as a sign of wealth. See an audio visual on the story of Ciaran and then a fully guided tour of the site.
We then make a lunch stop (at own cost) in the town of Shannonbridge before arriving at our Hotel on the outskirts of Galway city in the small village of Oranmore. A welcome cup of tea or coffee is served at Check-in and then we meet a little later for dinner.
Day 2: This morning we travel to Ros a Mhil to catch the morning ferry to Inishmore the largest of the Aran Islands. The Aran Islands are 3 Islands guarding the mouth of Galway Bay. They are known for retaining the old Irish way of life and preserving the Irish language. The largest island, Inishmore, is home to the prehistoric fort of Dún Aengus.
On arrival we take a short bus trip to Dun Aengus, perched on top of a cliff (steep climb, not for all) which is said to date back to 1500BC. We later head back to Kilronan for soup and sandwiches and then free time to shop and explore village before our ferry ride back to the mainland.
Dinner is served again this evening at our hotel.
Day 3: Day at leisure in Galway city. Known as “the City of the Tribes”, the city’s hub is 18th-century Eyre Square, a popular meeting spot surrounded by shops and traditional pubs that often offer live Irish folk music. Nearby, cafes, boutiques and art galleries line the main shopping Quarter, which retains portions of the medieval city walls. After a short walking tour this morning the rest of the day is free for you to shop or explore this vibrant city. Transfers will be provided back to hotel at 2pm and 4pm.
This evening entertainment is provided in hotel bar after dinner.
Day 4: Today we discover the beauty and charm of Connemara. We stop for a demonstration at Connemara Marble and then for tea or coffee (at own cost) at Maam Cross. See a copy of the Quiet Man cottage made famous by John Wayne and Maureen O Hara at this stop. We then travel through the Inagh Valley to Kylemore Abbey to discover the beauty and romance of one of Ireland’s most intriguing estates run by the Benedictine Order and founded in 1920 on the grounds of Kylemore Castle. This order of Nuns fled Belgium in World War I.
After our time at Kylemore we travel back through the wild Connemara landscape to Galway taking in fantastic view of mountains and lakes.
Dinner again is served at Hotel this evening.
Day 5: After breakfast and a late check out we travel back through the midlands towards home with a stop in Athlone for lunch (at your own cost) before arriving home early evening.
