Europe's biggest outdoor festival took place in Ratheniska, Co Laois. This year marked the 84th National ploughing championships, which kicked off Tuesday September 22nd - September 24th. The event was bigger and better than ever with over 1,400 exhibitors spread across 800 acres. The ploughing had so much to offer for all the family featuring a tented Trade Village, a Food Fair, Craft Village, Livestock, Forestry, Education, Lifestyle, Motor Show, Financial Services, Bio Energy and Agricultural Service. This festival has come a long way since it started in 1931 and is truly embedded in Irish culture.
It's true to say, both our drivers and customer's thoroughly enjoyed the Ploughing. Our driver John travelled with the actors & actresses from The Burning of the Wildgoose Lodge movie. His first impressions were amazement at the sheer size of the event and how well it was organised; with Gardai directing traffic on all routes. To mark the trailer launch of The Burning of the Wildgoose Lodge, the drama group put on an outstanding show at 12pm Wednesday 23rd. The show featured some well-known and loved characters including John Connors (Patrick from Love/Hate), Dave Duffy (Leo Dowling from Fair City) and Finbarr Furey. Our driver Gerry who also attended this year's ploughing described the atmosphere as electric, with lots of live music, entertainment and fun activities for children.
He enjoyed the fantastic buzz in the Aldi marquee with live music from Mike Denver, while tasting lots of free samples of artisan cuisine. Whereas John visited the traditional activities including sheep shearing, the livestock arena, pole climbing and vintage ploughing & threshing. It truly is a great day out and gives customers a chance to meet and chat with different well know companies such as Lidl, Toyota and Clonakility. More importantly, it is an excellent opportunity for Irish suppliers to showcase their products and services. There was so much going on over the three days of the Ploughing. If you missed it, be sure to put it in your diary for next year!
